Sony Entertainment released
a new official trailer today for Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated latest
creation Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The new movie will be the
ninth film to be written and directed by Tarantino and with an all-star cast
set in late 60’s to early 70’s Los Angeles, it’s difficult to imagine it not
being immediately hailed as an instant classic upon its release.
The plot follows a B-movie actor named Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff
Booth (portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt respectively) on their journey
through the ups and downs of Hollywood life, woven with several other
storylines which will be, according to Tarantino himself, “a tribute to the
final moments of Hollywood’s golden age.”
In an interview with Esquire released just hours after the
trailer, the publication’s executive director Michael Hainey spoke with
Tarantino, Pitt and DiCaprio at length about all aspects of the film’s
production.
“It’s
not historical fact per se. It’s a Hollywood of Reality – but a Hollywood of
the mind at the same time.”
- Quentin Tarantino
In the interview, Brad Pitt described the auspicious director as “the
last purveyor of cool.” and added “if you land in one of his films, you know
you’re in great hands.” DiCaprio continued, saying “[Tarantino's] sets are so magnetic. You don’t
walk onto sets like this anymore, where everyone has respect for the
process.”
The director believes that this film is the closest thing he’s done
to 1994’s Pulp Fiction in terms of structure with several stories woven within each other, connecting later in the movie.
“Think
multiple characters (some real, some imagined) and story lines that are
seemingly unrelated... until they are not. Until they intersect and intertwine
in surprising ways.”
- Quentin Tarantino
The fascinating interview, which you
can read here, is coupled with a photoshoot in which the stars and their
director pose in a number of situations with a number of props quintessential
to the era of the film, including a rather stunning orange Cadillac.
The movie will include a number of
real-life historical figures including Sharon Tate, Bruce Lee, River Phoenix, Steve McQueen
and infamous proxy serial killer Charles Manson. The exuberant cast includes Margot
Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Tim Roth, Timothy Olyphant, Al Pacino, Kurt Russell,
Luke Perry, Michael Madsen and even Karate Kid and Cobra Kai
actor Martin Kove among many other famous and at the very least, highly
recognisable faces.
The movie, carrying a budget of
approximately $100m, is set to be released on August 14th with an 18
age rating and a runtime of just over two-and-a-half hours.
