Game of Thrones - Fan Petition Reaches 1.3 Million Signatures

The war is over! After eight amazing seasons, the struggle for control over the Seven Kingdoms has reached its dramatic conclusion! The final season has shown fans the epic battle between the armies of Westeros and the White Walkers beyond the wall (a wall which finally fell after the surprise arrival of the undead white dragon in the Season 7 finale).

A petition on Change.org slamming the writers as “incompetent” and demanding the season finale be rewritten reached a million signatures in a matter of hours and is set to reach two million over the coming days. Fans of the show have expressed their disappointment and, in some cases, outrage at the writers’ apparent disregard for their sensibilities.

Actress Sophie Turner, the face of much beloved Sansa Stark, has quite rightly hit back at critical fans in response to the petition.

I think it's disrespectful to the crew, and the writers, and the filmmakers who have worked tirelessly over 10 years, and for 11 months shooting the last season.

Turner has played a major part in the show since the very first episode, surviving all the way through each season and finally, at the climax of the Season 8 finale, taking her rightful place as Queen of the North. The British actress has more than proved herself in the acting realm and will star in Fox’s upcoming movie X-Men: Dark Phoenix, returning to reprise her role as Young Jean Grey.

The Season 8 premier episode brought HBO a record number of 17.4m viewers on various platforms. The series overall has won 239 awards of 715 nominations including 3 Emmys and contains four of the top ten highest paid actors in television history. It is the most expensive TV show ever made carrying a budget of $15m per episode and HBO have licensed a huge variety of shockingly expensive merchandise including replica costumes, props, clothing, Funko Pop figures, boardgames and a $30,000 resin replica of the iron throne. An officially licensed MMORPG published by Bigpoint Games is also available online now and the possibility of a spin-off series is still under discussion between HBO and original Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced last week that, after a three-year hiatus, Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will pen a new Star Wars movie set for release in December of 2022. Unfortunately for the writers, they are currently under fire from disgruntled fans, disinclined to afford them the chance. More fan controversy may be lurking just around the corner in the wake of the unpopular Game of Thrones finale!
